The Vice-Chancellor in a discussion with the Chairman and members of the committee

The final draft of the revised Statutes of the University of Ghana has been handed over to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C.N.B Tagoe by Prof. C.E.K. Kumado, in a short handing-over ceremony.

Prof. Kumado, the immediate past Director of the Legon Centre for International Affairs (LECIA) was the Chairman of the Review Committee. Recounting the background of the setting up of the Committee, he said the review of the Statutes was initiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C.N.B. Tagoe who he noted deemed it expedient upon his induction into office, to review the Statutes of the university in order to bring the enabling Act into the twenty first century.

Prof. Kumado mentioned that the exercise which had taken two years to complete had as members, Prof. J.N. Ayertey, of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, Emeritus Prof. E. Laing, of the Boatany Department, Dr. Dominic Ayine, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law. Mr. Kojo Kpelie, Assistant Registrar at the Human Resource and Organisational Development Directorate was Secretary.

Prof. Kumado said the committee was of the view that the review exercise should be done periodically. “We think this review exercise should become cyclical, may be every five years”. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor for entrusting the work to them, to help promote the governance of the university. “This is the final draft. We assume when discussed with Council it will be approved” he added.

Receiving the final draft of the statutes of the university, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C.N.B Tagoe noted that the work of the Committee was a long challenging task. “I hope history will best describe your efforts” he said, adding that when he appointed the committee, he had no doubt that they would come out with the best.

Reiterating the sentiments expressed by Prof. Kumado on the periodic review of the Statutes, the Vice-Chancellor agreed that “as a living document, it is important for the Statutes to be reviewed as it brings life into the university”. He expressed his deepest appreciation to the committee for devoting their time to get the work done.
